Circuit-Switcher Workshop

August 14 to 15, 2019 | Ontario, Canada

S&C’s two-day-long Circuit-Switcher Workshop will provide attendees with valuable, in-depth information and a unique hands-on experience in the installation, operation, adjustment, and maintenance of the following S&C Circuit-Switchers:

  • Type G through Mark V Circuit-Switchers
  • Series 2000 Circuit-Switchers


The workshop’s primary emphasis is on Circuit-Switchers rated 34.5 kV through 230 kV. This course will be delivered by S&C Electric Canada Ltd. at the Hydro One Stations Training facility located in Orangeville, Ontario.

Participants are required to bring the following safety equipment: dielectric footwear, safety glasses, a hard hat, hearing protection, and fire-resistant clothing.

The Circuit-Switcher Workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on each day at the Orangeville Stations Training facility, 125 C Line, Orangeville, Ontario, Canada, L9W 3V2.

The registration fee for this workshop is C$3,000 per attendee. Participation is limited to 12 attendees for this workshop.

Distribution Automation Workshop: IntelliTeam® Automatic Restoration System

August 20 to 22, 2019 | Chicago, Illinois

Understand the sequence of operations in IntelliTeam® II Automatic Restoration Systems and IntelliTeam® SG Automatic Restoration Systems with Rapid Self-Healing. Familiarize yourself with the S&C switching and protection equipment that can be integrated in IntelliTeam® Automatic Restoration Systems, and discuss the ability to integrate third-party devices using IntelliNode™ Interface Modules.

Configure a system using IntelliLink® Setup Software and IntelliTeam® Designer, and then connect to devices and push the restoration settings. Discuss optional settings for systems with capacity constraints, including contracts. Practice troubleshooting and event analysis from live events performed in S&C’s Product Demonstration Center.

Attendees wanting to learn more about specific devices incorporated into IntelliTeam Automatic Restoration Systems, such as IntelliRupter® fault interrupters, should consider attending individualized product courses. Instructors for this workshop are S&C application and field-service engineers who design, quote, and/or implement such solutions.

Microgrid Design and Implementation Workshop

This S&C two-day workshop will teach attendees about the concepts, fundamental theories, practical design process, and applications of microgrids.

S&C’s instructors for this workshop have performed the engineering design and implementation for several cutting-edge and award-winning microgrids, have patents pending on prior microgrid work, and lead industry working groups and presentations on microgrids.

The workshop is intended for engineers, researchers, and industry managers who want to learn more about cutting-edge microgrid technologies, design of microgrids, and successful microgrid implementation.

What attendees will learn:

  • Microgrid fundamentals, use cases, and business cases
  • Challenges and barriers of microgrid development, including both economic and technical feasibility
  • Engineering design and analytical studies required for successful integration of modern microgrids, including selection and integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), advanced microgrid protection and controls, and communication systems
  • Testing microgrid components and integrated systems
  • Case studies of several cutting-edge and award-winning operational microgrids (These case studies will be used to illustrate concepts and processes discussed earlier in the workshop. Featured microgrid case studies include a PEER v2 GOLD certification recipient, an energy storage plus solar off-grid industrial campus, and a community microgrid.)

Topics include PulseClosing® Technology; the PulseFinding™ Fault Location Technique; protection settings, including bi-directional overcurrent protection; communication settings; and more.

Become versed in the hardware features and practice operating IntelliRupter fault interrupters manually and via IntelliLink® Setup Software. Upgrade the firmware on a control module. Perform troubleshooting by reviewing diagnostics, status logs, and event logs from live events performed in S&C’s Product Demonstration Center.

Distribution Automation Workshop: Advanced IntelliRupter® Fault Interrupter

Dive deeper into the advanced features of IntelliRupter fault interrupters, such as Communication-Enhanced Coordination (CEC) and Intelligent Fuse Savings (IFS).

Configure a loop restoration scheme between two IntelliRupter fault interrupters. Learn the procedures for downgrading firmware. Perform more in-depth event analysis by downloading waveforms and analyzing in WaveWin software.

It is recommended that participants attend the basic IntelliRupter® Fault Interrupter Workshop prior to this advanced course. The basic course is offered immediately before the advanced course. Distribution Overcurrent Protection Coordination Workshop

October 1 to 2, 2019 | Chicago, Illinois

Attendees to this S&C two-day workshop will develop a general understanding of traditional overcurrent protection of electric power distribution systems. They will learn which devices are used for overcurrent protection, how the protective devices function, and how devices are selected or are set to provide appropriate protection to the power system equipment while coordinating operation with other protective devices.

Instructors for this workshop are S&C consulting engineers who have extensive experience applying and coordinating distribution overcurrent protection, including fuses, reclosers, and relayed circuit breakers. This workshop is intended for engineers and industry managers who want to learn about distribution system protection and coordination.

What attendees will learn:

  • Normal and abnormal power system behavior: Load current, temporary overload current, transient inrush currents, and fault currents
  • What overcurrent protective devices are applied on an electric power distribution system and their basic operation: circuit breakers and relays, reclosers, sectionalizers, and fuses
  • Time-current characteristics (TCCs) of various protective devices (This will include how normal tolerances should be applied to manufacturer-published operating curves and how device operating times are depicted on a TCC coordination plot to ensure selective operation.)
  • How power system components may be damaged by excessive overcurrent and how appropriate selection of protective devices and settings can minimize the chances for equipment damage
